1- Reading comprehension: A dialogue
1.1- Let’s begin by reading the following dialogue between two friends: Fiona and Clare
I’m bored. | |||
Me too. Let’s go to the park.
Good idea. But which one? There are three parks near here.
Mmm. How about going to the one next to the café?
Yes! And then we can have a smoothie.
Fiona | Clare |
1.2- Before working on the activities, let´s have some grammar snack:
- “Bored” is a feeling of being “unhappy” because you have nothing to do.
- “Let’s” is used to make suggestions. It´s always followed by a verb in the infinitive, the basic form of the verb, for example, play, go, make, watch, eat, have, be.
Examples:
Let´s make a pizza.
Let´s go to the cinema.
Let´s play in the park
- “One” is used not to refer to a particular object without repeating its name.
Example 1:
– A: Which T-shirt do you prefer?
– B: I want to red one. One means T-shirt = The red T-shirt
Example 2:
– A: That´s my bag?
– B: Which one, the brown one or the black one? One in this case indicates bag.
– A: The brown one = the brown bag
- Expressing existence: There is / There are
We use “There is” when we talk about only one object. For example, “There is a café opposite the park”.
We use “There are” when we talk about more than one object. For example, “There are three parks near here”.
