1- Popular sports
A sport is a competitive physical activity or game. An important characteristic of sports is that you can have fun while doing exercise, also many of them are fun to watch too!
Typical sports are running, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, volleyball, boxing, gymnastics, swimming and, many more! Ben and Mary will talk about the most popular sports in their schools:
1.1- Doing sports
Hello! My name is Ben, I’m 12 years old. I think that the most popular sport in my school is football; my classmates and I play football every day. It is a great sport because you need to be organized and helpful to encourage teamwork. On the other hand, it’s exciting and competitive since that the more superior team wins.
I love playing football!
Hi! My name is Mary and I’m 14 years old. I think that the most popular sport in my school is running. My running team and I run every morning before classes start, we are more than 50 students! I enjoy running because it’s easy and a great outdoor sport.
Also, I like listening to music while running, it’s really relaxing and peaceful.

We can divide sports into 3 categories and use different verbs for each one:
DO: for recreational or non-team activities that don’t use a ball.
PLAY: for competitive sports or games that use a ball where we play in a team.
GO: for activities ending in ING.

2- Express yourself about activities
2.1- Some useful expressions:
To express likes or preferences we use the following verbs: like, love, prefer, enjoy, hate, dislike. These verbs are followed by another verb ending in -ing or a noun. Look at the examples:
- I love football. (love + noun)
- I love playing football. (love + -ing form)
To make negative sentence use don’t/doesn’t:
- I don’t like playing basketball.
- She doesn’t enjoy doing yoga.
2.2- Explain why
To explain why we like a sport or an activity we can use the connector BECAUSE (connector that we use to give reasons):
