Creando mi ciudad ideal: Expresar cantidades, contar y enumerar

1- Creating my ideal city

Hello! I’m Alina. My dream city would have at least ten cinemas! I love watching movies and the atmosphere of these places is very unique, that’s why I like going to the movies so much. Just recently, the first cinema in my current city was inaugurated, and I always spend a lot of time there. So, if there are more cinemas everywhere, that would be amazing for me.

Hi, this is Paul. I like the place where I’m currently living in, because it is the second city I’ve lived in that doesn’t have two thousand cars. Therefore, in my ideal city, there would be no cars. Maybe one or two police cars, but nothing else. Imagine living a peaceful life, without all the air and noise pollution that cars bring into the world. Nobody would have respiratory problems, and everyone would be happier.

Hello, my name is Karla. As I love pizza, the perfect city for me would have at least one hundred pizza restaurants. There are less than twelve where I live, so it would be great to have more options to choose from.

Hi! I’m Nico. My ideal city would have eight stadiums, because I love football. Where I live, there are already seven, but I wouldn’t mind the construction of an eighth stadium.  Imagine teams playing several matches every day and being able to enjoy these games every day. The city could also have more than three amusement parks since my children love roller coasters.

2- Quantities

Let’s look at the words in bold:

Ten, First, Second, Two thousand, One, Two, One hundred, Twelve, Eight, Seven, Eighth, Three

Numbers express
QUANTITY

Notice the difference!

Eight Eighth
Cardinal Number

Ordinal Number

A CARDINAL number expresses how many

Example:  Eight = Ocho

An ORDINAL number expresses the position or order of something.

Example: Eighth = Octavo

We form ORDINAL numbers adding -th to the corresponding CARDINAL number

For example:

Four
(cuatro)
Fourth
(cuarto)
Sixteen
(dieciséis)
Sixteenth
(decimosexto)

There are some exceptions when writting the ordinal numbers;

One First (1st)
Two  Second (2nd)
Three  Third (3rd)
Five Fifth (5th)
Eight Eighth (8th)
Nine Ninth (9th)
Twelve Twelfth (12th)

In compound ordinal numbers you only add the last digit as an ordinal form.

Example: 421st = four hundred and twenty-first

NOT: four hundredth and twentieth -first.

Here’s a complete list of cardinal numbers and their corresponding ordinal numbers:
